Acne is a common skin condition that affects the hair follicles and oil glands on the face, neck, chest, back and shoulders
Typical at puberty, hormonal changes start stimulating the production of sebum (an oily substance) in the skin causing the appearance of these various types of blemishes:
Blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, cysts and nodules.
Several factors can contribute to the development and severity of acne, including:
Hormonal changes
The increase in androgens like testosterone during adolescence or other fluctuations, stimulate the skin’s oil glands to produce more sebum. Excess sebum, combined with dead skin cells, can clog hair follicles, creating an environment conducive to the growth of acne-causing bacteria. This process leads to inflammation and the formation of acne lesions.
Genetics
They contribute to acne by influencing factors like sebum production and hormonal sensitivity. Individuals with a family history of acne may inherit a predisposition to overactive oil glands and heightened hormonal responses. This genetic influence, combined with environmental factors, such as diet and stress, contributes to the development of acne.
Excessive oil production
It clogges hair follicles with a mix of oil and dead skin cells. This blockage creates an ideal environment for acne-causing bacteria, resulting in blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples.
Bacterial activity
Acne happens when bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) overgrow in clogged pores, feeding on skin oil and causing inflammation.
Inflammation
It triggers the production of excess oil in our skin. When hair follicles get clogged with oil and dead skin cells, it creates an environment where bacteria can thrive. The body’s response to this bacterial presence is inflammation, leading to red, swollen pimples. So, in simple terms, inflammation is like the body’s reaction to the clogged pores and bacteria, contributing to the development of acne.
There are various over-the-counter topical creams that can remedy this skin concern and various other procedures such as
Chemical peels
A chemical peel involves applying a chemical solution to the skin, which exfoliates the top layers, revealing fresher, brighter skin underneath.
Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing solutions
This solution can help revitalize acne by removing the outer layer of damaged skin cells, as it stimulates collagen production and promotes the growth of fresh, healthy skin cells, resulting in a brighter complexion.
Weird facts about acne
Acne is an annoying fact of life for more than 85% of all people.
Acne has no age restriction. Even though it might start around puberty, some people may get acne in their 50’s.
Regardless of popular belief, diet is not the cause of acne.
Exposure to air pollution, including particulate matter and traffic-related pollution, may be linked to an increased prevalence of acne according to research.
Various unusual substances have been used to treat acne. In ancient times, people applied mixtures containing substances like wine, myrrh, and sulfur to their skin in an attempt to treat acne.
